Abrasion Resistance Solutions for Pneumatic Hoses
Hose assemblies prone to regular cycles of intensive friction require regular monitoring for abrasion damage, enhanced workers' safety and preventing equipment failure. Many pneumatic applications, from presses to cranes and forklifts, require special shields to reduce the risk of abrasion damage. Other excellent solutions for abrasion resistance in pneumatic hoses include:
Using Abrasion Sleeves
These sleeves are designed with a lightweight yet tough urethane-coated nylon sleeve that helps to achieve two things; providing resistance to abrasion and holding the hose assemblies together. Some abrasion sleeves feature tubular weaves that allow the pneumatic hose/s to move on the walls easily. When selecting abrasion sleeves for your hoses, make sure you understand the targeted abrasion cycles. For example, if your hose only requires light abrasion resistance, sleeves that can withstand 50 abrasion cycles might be enough. However, sleeves that can handle up to 200,000 abrasion cycles might be the best pick for pneumatic hoses experiencing high levels of abrasion resistance.
Hose Shields
If you are looking for a more pinpointed type of abrasion resistance, another unique option might be the hose shields. These hose shields are inexpensive solutions and can work excellently when used correctly. To use the hose shields, you do not require disconnecting the hose for installation because they are designed with cable ties. Most hose shields are made in 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch lengths for use with hose I.D.s of 0.25-inch to 2-inch.
If your hoses experience intensive abrasion, especially when more than one section is exposed, hose shields are not recommended. In such a case, it might be a good idea to consider abrasion sleeves.
Spring Guards and Armor Guards
If your facility’s pneumatic hoses are exposed to rugged abrasive environments, the spring and armor guards can also be good options. They are designed with varying materials, such as flat steel and black vinyl, to provide buyers with many buying options. In addition to their excellent abrasion abilities, these guards are also good at preventing hose kinking.
Another product that closely resembles the spring and armor guards is the polymer spiral wraps. They are pretty easy to use because all that you need to do is add them to the existing hose assembly. You can also rely on them to hold cables, tubing, and wiring and protect them from abrasion. Their open spiral design allows you to use them without shutting down the equipment.
Abrasion Resistant Hose Covers
If your hoses are exposed to the most demanding applications, abrasion resistance covers would be a great find. These covers are made with synthetic rubber and they are stronger than most abrasion materials you will get out there. They can provide up to 650 times more abrasion resistance compared to standard rubber used on hose covers.
If your pneumatic hoses are subject to very high-pressure applications and abrasion, the solutions we have listed in this post can come in handy. Remember that it will also be an excellent idea to ensure that all other parts of the pneumatic system, including the valves, couplings, and fittings, are checked regularly and maintained in top conditions.
