Ball Bearing Uses in Heavy Duty Machinery

While ball bearings are widely known to be used in common devices and applications such as automobiles, skateboard wheels, and household appliances, they are also a vital part of most large industries. This means they are often used in heavy duty machinery for manufacturing, construction, or other processes. Ball bearings for this use are engineered with extremely high load capacities and durability to run under strenuous conditions. They are commonly made of steel, ceramic, or hybrid materials. Ceramic balls allow the bearing to have greater speed capabilities, and require minimal lubrication and maintenance, allowing for long term, continuous use. Heavy duty bearings also typically have highly protective seals or special coatings, as they are often used in challenging environments subject to exposure to high temperatures, dust or dirt, and liquids or chemicals. Here are some examples of the kinds of equipment and machines these ball bearings are used in:

Construction: A wide variety of heavy equipment is utilized in construction, as a lot of heavy loads of materials must be lifted and transported on a large scale. For this, a multitude of heavy vehicles are used, such as cranes, forklifts, reach stackers, cherry pickers, snowcats, and bulldozers. In paving processes, cure rigs, pavers, cold planers, and rollers may be used.

Mining and Timber: Similar to the construction industry, mining involves relocating large loads of materials and earth-moving, requiring the use of heavy equipment and vehicles. This machinery can include excavators, yarders, cranes, drilling rigs, harvesters, wheel skitters, power shovels, and more.

Cement: Many different types of heavy equipment are used in the cement industry, from mixing concrete, to transportation, to pouring and paving. This process involves the use of highway transit mixers, pavers, and mining equipment.

Waste Management: The handling of waste materials and sanitation departments use lots of heavy vehicles, such as soil compactors, dump trucks, street sweepers, and different types of tractors.

Agriculture: The agricultural industry relies heavily on heavy duty equipment, mostly through the use of tractors. They can pull a variety of machines used in the planting, harvesting, feeding, fertilizing, and spraying processes. Specific types of agriculture such as sugar mills and palm oil production also use similar types of vehicles, such as cane harvesters, cane shredders, and different types of wagons.

Steel Production: A variety of equipment is used in the process of steel production, from mining raw materials, to rolling and refining the final product. This can include cranes, excavators, and more.

Wind Turbines: Turbines used to produce energy are extremely large and heavy pieces of equipment, weighing over 200 tons. They require bearings with certain specifications to run continuously with minimal maintenance.

Railways: Trains and railway transportation feature extremely heavy vehicles, and relies heavily on rotational movement, requiring the use of heavy duty bearings capable of continuous usage.
