Basic Introduction to Pipe Fittings

Pipe fittings are components used to manage the flow of fluid through a system of connected pipework to adjacent elements such as taps, instrumentation, cylinders, valves, bulkheads & manifolds, pumps, nozzles, compressors, hydraulic equipment & pneumatic power tools etc.

The range of sizes is vast. The materials used to construct the fittings can be plastic, copper & it's alloys, carbon steel and stainless steel. Fittings are available to match imperial or metric threads and hose/tube/pipe diameters.

Method of sealing can be compression ferrule (olive), compression seal, push fit (static seal) tapered thread and welded/soldered joints.

The design of fittings include; elbows of varying angle, connectors/adaptors, unions, plugs, tees, crosses, nipples, bushes and also specialist fittings. As well as male and female end types.

Pipe fittings are rated for maximum pressure limits. Pneumatic fittings are rated for a much lower service pressure than hydraulic fittings.

Typical examples of pipe fittings are shown below.
