How to select a robust pressure gauge?

Selecting a robust and fit for purpose product is much easier when you can pick it up and hold it in your hand to examine the quality and weight of it. Otherwise, choose a branded product from a premium manufacturer. Also consider that the design and integration of the product into an application may be at fault, for example, if a pressure gauge is protruding from a piece of equipment, it may be prone to accidental damage, in which case modify the setup to prevent this occurrence by reconfiguration or using a sturdy metal guard or shield.

As always understanding the application in every detail can help offer a solution. I owned a foot pump for car and bike tires from the 1980’s which lasted 30 years. When it eventually failed,I bought one and then another replacement, both new and unused, unfortunately, one did not work at all and the other functioned only once. The manufacturers had cheapened the design, material, and build quality too much. My solution was to buy a used foot pump built in the 1950s. It has a cast iron base a double acting brass cylinder with leather seals and is perfectly well built and will offer decades of reliable service.
