Instrument transformers are commonly used to use devices from high current circuits or high voltage lines isolating control and measurement circuitry. The primary winding of the transformer is linked to the high voltage or high current circuit, and relay or the meter is linked to the secondary circuit. To ensure secondary amounts can be utilized without changing the primary circuitry instrument transformers are often used as an isolation transformer.
This applies to both kinds of instrument transformers. Right identification of wiring and terminals is crucial for appropriate functioning of protective and metering relay instrumentation.
Two circuits are linked by an isolation transformer but supplies no metallic conductive path between the circuits. A good example use would take the power supply for medical equipment, when it's needed to prevent any leakage into apparatus linked to your patient in the AC power system.
