CONVEYOR WORLD’S NINE WONDERS
May 21, 2016
Conveyor belts have been in use dating back to the 17th century. From farming to food production, the late 19th century has seen development of many simple mining conveyors.
The world’s strongest conveyor belt has been installed in Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. The steel conveyor belts have the highest specific breaking strength with two extremely long downhill tracks that serves one of the largest reserves of copper in the country. The belts run at 6 metres per second, and they have a breaking strength of more than 15,000 kilo newtons.
The world’s fastest conveyor belt is situated in the coal mines in Germany. The belts run at 15 metres per second. These belts are used to carry lignite a kind of brown coal. The world’s steepest conveyor belt is in use at the Pierina mine in the Andean Cordillera. The belt is over 5,500 metres in length. Transporting gold ore down the mountain at angles of up to 18 degrees, making it one of the steepest overland conveyor belts currently operational in the world.
The world’s longest conveyor belt is situated in Lima, Peru. It measures a total 16.4 km in length. These record-breaking conveyors have revolutionized the mining industry.
