Secretive Fusion Company reveals a 'reactor breakthrough'
Dec 16, 2015
Breakthrough in fusion power is round the corner that can be a limitless source of energy. A secretive firm Tri Alpha Energy has developed a reactor that can hold plasma at 10 million °C for 5 milliseconds. The researchers are trying to achieve 3 billion °C, the temperature at which fusion reaction takes place, which is hotter than the surface of the sun. The innovative process could pave way for fusion power and end dependency on fossil fuels.
Although it’s a relatively simple concept, but currently no known material can hold this heat. Tri Alpha is using magnetic field methodology to overcome this challenge, but it says the breakthrough is the innovative reactor design where pairs of plasma donuts are collided with a long tube to produce heat.
Tri Alpha reactor may be able to operate with a different fuel than most other fusion reactors. The fuel is a mix of hydrogen and boron and with the help of beams of high-energy particles it’s stabilized, the fuel is harder to react, but scientists say it avoids many of the problems and likely to confront conventional fusion power plants.
Tri Alpha is keeping the project under wraps. If its claims are true, it offers proof that fusion power could someday be a reality, ending the world's reliance on fossil fuels.
