World’s biggest gas turbine
Apr 09, 2016
World’s biggest gas turbine can power an entire city – 400,000 homes. At full capacity it generates 397 mega watt output. GE’s 9HA gas turbine is one of the biggest and most powerful machines ever built and one of its kinds in the world.
In eastern France near the Swiss border, in Belfort city, the turbine was official launched. It is the new jewel of innovation from GE. Total 1800 employees have worked for three years in the development process and over 100 million Euros were spent to develop the assembly line and testing benches capable of building and testing these giant turbines.
Each 9HA weighs as much as an Airbus A380 super-jumbo, it promises a revolution in power generation for next generation thermal power plants. It's not only a big beast, but also very efficient turbine and could reach to its full capacity in just 28 minutes. The gas turbine can switched on at a moment’s notice.
The turbine has been designed especially for EDF’s Bouchain power plant, in the north of France. Since it’s fitted with 100’s of sensors, which can provide real-time performance analytics, it can be easily optimized for various real time conditions. This means unmatched efficiency, lower operating costs and easier maintenance.
