History

Bussmann was founded in 1914 by five brothers: Al, Frank, Harry, Joe, and Lee Bussmann. The company's first product was a non-renewable cartridge fuse. Several years later, Harry receives two patents for cartridge and electric fuses. A year later, in 1924, Frank is awarded a portable electric lamp patent. In 1929, the Fusetron® fuse technology was patented and the company was acquired by Max McGraw. In 1963, the company is awarded a patent for its Class J time-delay fuse design. Four years later, the company introduced its patented Low-Peak® fuse product line. In 1979, Bussmann moved its headquarters and manufacturing facility to a St. Louis suburb: Ellisville, Missouri. In 1985, McGraw Edison (formerly Max McGraw) was purchased by Cooper Industries, Inc. In 1992, the company introduced the patented LPCC midget time-delay fuse. A year later, Cooper Bussmann built the Paul Gubany Center for High Power Technology. The company also received a patent for surface-mount chip fuses (which it also introduced) within the same year. In 2000, Cooper Bussmann is awarded five patents for its finger-safe CUBEFuse® device. In late 2012, the company was acquired by Eaton to become part of its electrical business.
