History

LEESON Electric Corporation's history started with Emil Doerr, the co-founder of St. Louis Electrical Works which was later renamed Baldor Electric. In 1939, Emil's sons (one of them named Lee) formed Doerr Electric. In 1972, Emil's grandsons from his son Lee formed LEESON Electric Corporation. Less than a year after the company was formed, the first 48 frame motor was tested. In 1974, the company started pilot runs of the first 48 frame production. In 1975, production was moved to a new plant in Grafton. By 1975, LEESON had 115 motor accounts. In 1977, the company established a subsidiary in Toronto, LEESON Canada, to better serve the growing market in the area. In 1985, the company purchased Unison Dynamics, a manufacturer of DC permanent magnet 48 and 56 frame motors. Three years later, Motronics Corporation, a company that manufactured sub-fractional horsepower AC and DC motors as well as gearmotors, was acquired by LEESON. In 1995, the company made another acquisition - Gear Systems, Inc. Two years later, LEESON expanded even further by purchasing Sandor Corporation. In 2000, LEESON joined Regal-Beloit Corporation, a manufacturer of mechanical and electrical components.
